Just wanted to comment on your post Gene, and where this thread went... That's a very valid point that you are making. Nobody HAS to be here; the one thing that has actually impressed me most about Tissa is how much time and effort he puts in to help his referrals, despite the fact that he could easily pay other people to do this and live his life as the rich man that he is. This is a great opportunity for everyone to experience the joy that comes from being genuinely helpful to others.

It's true that it won't put money in your pocket right away, but money isn't everything.

And a moderator would definitely be a welcome addition. Someone mentioned that we are all adults; that may be true physically, but unfortunately is far from true mentally and emotionally. Many people don't know how to handle adversity and explode when it becomes too much for them. It is sad, but true. Many people are still insecure children inside; and no wonder, with family integrity being as low as it is.

I am not being critical or judgmental here; I really wish I could help everyone in the world to solve their problems, and of course I can't. So I am just reminding everyone to think of the underlying causes of people's behavior. I can only feel sorry for them. sad

I would say the MS Society because my father has MS and he is home all the time, so with research to help them, people who are disabled and stay home can be able to work at home all the time.  My father if he had the right skills could spend so much time researching and doing online businesses.

I wonder if this could happen. Creating our own charity for work from home disabled people. Either way, the money si gonna be spent wise. Life is good when you can contribute to the lives of others.

Well, this thread quickly degraded!

Back to the matter at hand.  I think everyone had excellent suggestions.  I'm leaning towards Tissa's idea.  I think if we could create something more than just a one time donation we could really do a lot of good.  So if this is something that the community thinks would be a rewarding endeavor, and Tissa would be willing to get the ball rolling, I'd like the $1,000 to go to Affiliates With Disabilities (AWD).  I was thinking we could setup an AWD APS account and start growing a GDI downline!  Members who are feeling generous could plug the AWD username into their links periodically and help the cause.

I like the name, but we should probably hold a "Name the Charity" contest and see what other members could come up with.  Then if a graphic designer in the community would be willing to offer his/her services to come up with a logo that would awesome!

-Chris

Hey Chris,  I just caught up with this thread and it has really went off course.  The original intention is a good one and it shouldn't be abandoned.  Give me a minute first.

First things first, there are matters of genuine concern in this thread and it would be good for those people wanting fast and quick answers to post those questions in the appropriate place.  That way, the right attention and emphasis would be placed on them instead of focusing on housekeeping and causing confusion.  Gene, please don't take this thread to a different direction either.  Hold your thoughts and talk about them at http://acme-people-search-forum.com/for … the-above/.  Initially, you wanted to do that anyways.

I think Tissa's idea was to have people create campaigns of their own to let people with disabilities know about the people search engine and how it could be an alternative choice of work from home instead of working in a normal job.

Tissa Godavitarne wrote:

While searching for charities that meet Chris' requirements, I got to thinking: What if we start our own movement to benefit "Affiliates with Disabilities"?  I haven't been able to find anything out there that supplies the demand in that "niche".  Not only would that embody the spirit of this forum, but it might satisfy Chris' desire

That does not mean it's not a good idea to have a charity AWD GDI account which sponsors could flip at will to generate donations for the cause.  This could be done during special holidays like Easter,  Indpendence day, thanksgiving and Xmas.

Another idea is a donation form that is setup which people could submit to Tissa prior to a specific payout period to contribute a  particular amount  of their pay or percentage of their earnings to the cause.  Tissa would have to keep track of the total amount and post updates from time to time on it.  When a certain amount is reached, then the total could amount could be donated to a charity like http://www.wid.org/.

I think a good name for this charity is "Affiliates Living With Disabilities Fund".

Gene,

I agree.  I think it will help a lot of people in the long term and it continues to build legitimacy that affiliate marketing is a real job smile

I guess at this point we need to hear from Tissa about the next steps.  He'll have to setup a 501(c)(3) and I'm sure there are some other legal aspects that will have to be addressed.

If the community is set to roll with the idea then why don't we start with a little contest to name the charity.

-Chris

Exactly.  Starting an "Affiliates with Disabilities Fund" or charity is an awesome idea, but setting up a 501(c)(3) organization is no simple task.  It can be done (and I don't mind doing it) but it takes time, and there are indeed several legal considerations.  For example:

http://startacharity.org/2008/10/28/tak … anization/

So what I propose is this: For now, why don't I create a sub-form dedicated to ongoing discussions about this charity/fund/donations idea?  I can also use it to keep everyone updated on my progress towards creating a 501(c)(3) organization, if that's what we decide to do.  (It will take some time, considering all the new program features and enhancements I'm still working on ;-)

While that effort is underway, let's return to suggesting existing charities to Chris.  I want to make sure that the $1,000 is donated as promised, and put to good use sooner than later!  In that regard, I have another suggestion: Kiva.  They're a U.S. 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and I've been active with them for a while.

In many ways I think Kiva will be perfect, since Kiva focuses on loans to entrepreneurs around the world who want to lift themselves out of poverty (like many affiliates LOL!)  This is micro-lending; we're talking about loans like $25, which to many people around the world can make a WORLD of difference.  And with $1,000 to loan, think about how many people we could help!  Because these are repaid loans, over time we could continue to loan that $1,000 to many more aspiring entrepreneurs.

It gets even better: With Kiva, you can create lending "teams".  We would all be part of the same team, representing Acme People Search.  As team members, all of us would be able view all loans we (and I) have made, and to whom.  Chris would have final say on all borrowers, though knowing Chris, I'm sure he would be open to suggestions from our community.  (There are many borrowers to choose from, depending on who strikes a chord with you personally...)  However Chris chooses to handle it, I would donate $1,000 to an assortment of borrowers, in the name of all Acme People Search affiliates smile

Admittedly Kiva is not focused on helping people with disabilities.  If you browse the thousands of entrepreneurs listed, you may find some with disabilities, who are trying to start their own businesses.  But Chris did specify that he wanted to focus on helping people with disabilities work from home.  So if he would prefer a different charity, that's perfectly fine too.  It's his call.

Ha!  Tissa, that might have been your best one yet! lol

I think Kiva is another excellent suggestion.  I'm a huge a fan of micro-lending.

This would allow the entire community to participate and we could get a lot of bang-for-the-buck when outstanding loans are repaid and then the money could be reissued to new entrepreneurs.  Plus it fits into the entrepreneurial spirit of this community.

What do you think, folks?

Tissa, at this point could we just get a contest going to name our main charity so we can start referring to it by name even though it won't be technically established until you can jump through the hoops and deal with all the red tape?  When we do start this do you think GDI would allow us to setup a GDI account for the sake of the charity?  How cool would that be to build residual income for the charity!  Also, I was thinking maybe we could talk to Kyle and Carson and see if they could help us out by donating discounted memberships for training?  Maybe we could apply the referral commission to the cost of membership?

Kiva sounds great to me cool. As for the name of the pending charity, I guess nobody picked up on this earlier, but someone mentioned that it would be cool to incorporate the "silver lining" (of a cloud) idea into the name. This was referring to the statement "there is always a silver lining." I liked this suggestion because it really focuses on the positive and it's upbuilding right off the bat. I am not sure if the name needs to contain what the charity is about, and if that's not necessary, my suggestion would be:

The Silver Lining Society

I think it would at least stimulate discussion; people would be curious to find out what that means, so they would click through to the mission statement, where we could explain why we would have chosen the name and what its meaning is.

I am really excited to see where this goes. big_smile

P.S. This is the original quote by eaglefly:

eaglefly11 wrote:

"So there's always a silver lining." This could very well be the name of a new group or charity. If you look at the bright side as he has done then there is a silver lining and we as affiliates can help make that silver lining brighter for many many more people who are physically challenged. In the past I've worked with people whose lifw has been changed in special ed and those who were parapallegic. This would be an opportunity for them to have a career that they can enjoy and keep the silver lining shining bbright as we pay it forward. I think it's a great idea. smile

Gene, don't take me wrong, the contest you got going to raise money for charity is awesome!  I'm totally for it.  For contestants, they'll have to contribute to these forums if they weren't already motivated by the Super Sponsor program.   Also, the essays would definitely raise awareness to help others.  Affiliate's would get more traffic for their APS engine with your expertise and offerings.   This is definitely a win-win for all.

I was referring to your comments about bianca70 in this thread which is unrelated to charity.  I know you wanted some feedback from Chris, Gary and Tissa but they haven't caught up on it yet.   Here is Gene's contest:

Gene's "ACME forum essay and raffle contest" fund raiser

Chris, I don't think there are enough affiliates whom have reach a level of success that they would actually contribute to a 501c3 organization yet.  At least I haven't seen enough interests expressed on this.  This could be revisited at a later time.

Getting back to that $1000, I would definitely support Tissa's Kiva suggestion.  This $1000 would definitely get recycled and could help a lot of poverished entrepreneurs around the world.  Affiliates could definitely help Tissa choose those borrower groups to loan the money to and track under ACME People Search Affiliate team account which Tissa handles.

In that case, this $1000 would be part of the "ACME People Search Affiliates Charity Fund".  For the money that Gene can help raise thru his essay contest and raffle fund raiser, some of that money could be set aside for "Affiliates Living With Disabilities".  Additional sources of funding could be determined at a later time.

Tissa, I think it would be a great idea to create a sub-forum to continue these discussions.   This would help all affiliates become aware of a greater cause that is taking place in the APS community and their efforts.

Slaven, initially when I read "silver lining", I didn't even know what it really meant so I think many other affiliates would ignore it if they don't even know what the term means.  Also, calling the charity "The Silver Lining Society" doesn't resonate that well with ACME people search at all.

Anyways, Chris still has the final say on what he wants to do with that $1000 and the charity's name.  That could be put to good use right way per Tissa's Kiva suggestion.

In regards to charity fund, I think that is definitely a good idea and we can do as a group to bring relief and humanity to the whole world.  This also brings so much more meaning to what each of us do on a day to day basis.

Using GDI to build residual income for a charity?  I LOVE it, Chris!  If we end up creating a 501(c)(3) organization, I'm sure GDI would allow an account for the organization.  After all, it would be a separate legal entity.
