Hello everyone I notice some new forum members asking what backlinks are recently and was wondering that this maybe helpful.
When I first started, I never understood the term “backlinks” meant and how they can be so important in SEO. I hope this would be of some help to some of the new members here in the forum.
First of all the main goal of SEO is to achieve a higher ranking in the search engine results. For example when we make a search for “digital cameras” on Google the first 10 results on Google will appear on the first page of Google.
It’s so important to get on the first page of Google, as people are most likely to visit sites on the first page.
Question is how does one get on the first page of Google?
When we hear SEO especially if your new, the only things that comes up as keyword optimization. Using the correct keywords, to achieve a better ranking for a particular search, yes this does help improve your ranking but what really counts is the amount of backlinks you get to your website.
For example if you upload a very popular video that already exists on Youtube (assuming that video has not been rated). Using the same tags and description of the no.1 video for that keyword, chances are when you make that search, you won’t even rank close to that no.1 video. This is because of the amount of backlinks the original video has achieved.
So what are backlinks?
A backlink is a one way link that is on someone else's website. They call it a backlink because it is pointing back to a different website. They're also known as incoming links, inbound links, or even BLs.
Why are they important?
As mentioned, there are important for your Search Engine Ranking Position(SERP). When we make a search on the internet using Google, Yahoo and so on for a particular keyword. Search engines will rank sites according to the amount of backlinks, the general rule is, the higher the amount of backlinks the more authority it carries and hence rank higher for selected keywords.
How do I get backlinks?
There are many many ways to get backlinks. Just to name a few
• Article submission – One of the best way to go!
• Blog commenting
• Forum signatures
• Link exchanges
• Social bookmarking
• Directory submission
Quality related backlinks?
Now getting backlinks are essential for ranking, but it’s also necessary to get “relevant” backlinks. What does Relevant mean? Here is a brief example
If for example your website is about chocolates, you would want backlinks from other chocolate related websites, and not something from just say a site about electric guitars.
If you do get such backlinks, this will not help you climb the ranks for your chocolate market. It’s important to put effort on getting quality backlinks.
How many backlinks on average do we need to be on the first page?
This really depends on the keyword you’re targeting and the quality of your backlinks
If you’re targeting a highly competitive keyword such as “workathome” most of the competitors have tons of backlinks it would be very hard .
On some occasions for not highly competitive keyword you could get ranked on the first page with very little effort.
The beauty about backlinks is that it is in your control. The more effort you put the more backlinks you will get. You are being rewarded for your efforts!
