Topic: Please help me select a charity!

Hello Fellow APS Members,

If you followed the $1,000 GDI Bug Hunt you know that it has now officially ended.  To make a long story short, no serious issues were discovered and a few potential leaks were quickly patched.

No one was able to demonstrate any instance of GDI leakage due to errors or bugs in the Acme People Search (APS) program, but since I came the closest, Tissa has offered to make a generous donation of $1,000 to the charity of my choice.

I'd like help from the community in selecting a charity.  My only requirement is I'd like to find a charity that helps people with disabilities work from home.  I know from listening in on many Webinars and communicating with some of my referrals that programs like Acme People Search can offer a tremendous opportunity to many who have mobility issues.  I'd like to find a charity that perhaps helps disabled individuals find legitimate telecommuting positions. Or maybe a charity that provides specialized computer/phone equipment.  Of course I'm open to any suggestions and/or recommendations so please help.

Thanks!

What about splitting it up 2,3, or 4 ways and give it to one of our own, who has a disability.  I guess it would be hard to prove.  See my recent post, suggestion.  Maybe something like that, but for our disabled.  I just remember from the webinar last week, there were a few people who were kind of struggling because of some physical issues.

Re: Please help me select a charity!

Yeah, NTI is great.

I found this in their aboutus page.

Although our goal is funding operations from revenues from our client organizations and companies and from participating state vocational rehabilitation agencies, we also obtain funding through competitive grant programs and charitable donations.

I'm thinking if you called them up to make an endowment, they wouldn't leave you on hold. wink

EDIT:  Rofl. A little further down the page and I found this:

If you would like to donate to NTI's efforts, please call us at 800-619-0111 or M.J. Willard. And thank you!

So there you go!

Does it have to be a US charity? I was thinking more international, but here's one in the UK.

Re: Please help me select a charity!

Of course any charity is great, but having a very close friend who has recently beaten cancer I would suggest something like sponsoring someone in Relay For Life.  Or contributing to the American Cancer Society.

Re: Please help me select a charity!

Ohh here's a couple more you can look at.

This one is CCI Enterprises. http://www.ccienterprises.org/

CCI Enterprises is a non-profit organization that excels in providing vocational and personal development services for people with disabilities.

This isn't really 'work from home', it's a 501(c)3 planned community for the disabled.
http://www.beverlyfarm.org/aboutus/

Beverly Farm, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, is a planned community designed to enhance the lives of our residents, develop their life skills, and provide the required medical care and a variety of therapies. Situated on 220 acres with an abundance of green space, Beverly Farm is a pleasant place to live and work for adults (18 and older) with developmental disabilities.

And this is the Statler Center, http://www.olmstedcenter.org/Home/StatlerCenter

The National Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service (a program of the Olmsted Center for Sight), is a unique and exciting concept in hospitality employment training that provides physically disabled individuals, and those who are blind or visually impaired.

Re: Please help me select a charity!

While searching for charities that meet Chris' requirements, I got to thinking: What if we start our own movement to benefit "Affiliates with Disabilities"?  I haven't been able to find anything out there that supplies the demand in that "niche".  Not only would that embody the spirit of this forum, but it might satisfy Chris' desire: "A charity that helps people with disabilities work from home".  And what a great way to give back to our own kind!  Anyway, just a (crazy) idea.  Chris has the final say on all suggestions, since he came closest.

Chris

Check out the World Institute on Disability (WID).  They have a lot of info on their website.  http://www.wid.org/  It appears they have international reach (and a clearly marked link for how to donate).  I applaud your choice for many reasons, not the least of which is that I have been disabled for the last five years now, and while I still do most things in the manner most people do them, it is becoming more and more difficult for me to "maintain" at that level.  One of the reasons I joined this program was that I was off work on disability leave ("again") and was desperately searching for income sources that required brain and not physical ability and/or that were not time-constrained (ie, you don't have to show up at 8 and stay until 5).

Tissa's program rocks!

Tissa

Tissa,

I don't think your idea is crazy at all.  I think it's a brilliant idea!

When I first started thinking about a charity to select I immediately thought of either the American Cancer Society or Susan G. Komen Foundation because I recently lost two family members to cancer.  Wonderful charities for sure, but then I was reminded of an e-mail exchange I had with one my referrals yesterday.  He's a young guy who was recently involved in a life-changing car accident.  Here are his own words:

"Yeah, I just say currently because it didn't happen that long ago; the disability is permanent, though. It has just forced me to look into income sources I probably would not have even considered if I was healthy. My original goal was to become a land surveyor, but I never got a chance to go to school before the accident, and now I couldn't do it anyways. So there's always a silver lining. I have also learned how to think positively, and that has helped me a lot in recovery and life in general. Traumatic events tend to do that I guess smile."

This story along with others I have heard during the weekly Webinars got me to thinking that there are many people who need a legitimate opportunity to work from home.  Tissa, I'm like you, I'm not cut from the 9 to 5 cloth (please, no singing).  My motivation to succeed at affiliate marketing has been driven solely from my desire for complete freedom.  I never even considered for a moment that for others it could mean a lot more.

We might have something here. . .

Re: Please help me select a charity!

"So there's always a silver lining." This could very well be the name of a new group or charity. If you look at the bright side as he has done then there is a silver lining and we as affiliates can help make that silver lining brighter for many many more people who are physically challenged. In the past I've worked with people whose lifw has been changed in special ed and those who were parapallegic. This would be an opportunity for them to have a career that they can enjoy and keep the silver lining shining bbright as we pay it forward. I think it's a great idea. smile

Re: Please help me select a charity!

I am waiting on a kidney transplant (7 years) and doctors gave me a slim chance to live past 30 (I'm 29).  I have to pay 20% of medical bills to get kidney transplant $51,000 ($259,000 total cost).  They told me with the rare kidney disorder I have that they didn't expect me to make it to 21.  I got a transplant at 18, but it rejected, and haven't been able to find a match since it rejected in 02.  Recently got a call for one in April, but it was a bad kidney, and I was hit with a $6,000 bill for one day.  I now have a possible donor, but they won't do transplant without at least $8,000 in savings.  I was told I couldn't have kids, but I am married with a 10 year-old girl and a 4 year-old boy.  I lost all my savings when medicaid said I made too much money and had to pay for all my dialysis treatments at the clinic 3 times a week $3,000 per treatment.  I almost lost my house after losing my cars, but the church stepped in where I minister at and helped me catch up.  Now I do dialysis at home, so the costs are not as steep.

You can actually read more about my life i my book "Whatever You're Going Through" available at amazon, barnes and nobles, and other book stores.

Because of my dialysis I am unable to work a career job, despite having a PhD in Business Administration which I had to accomplish online because of dialysis.  I am hoping I can raise up the needed funds quickly for my transplant, that's why I decided to join this opp.  I'm not looking for a handout, but a hand in the right direction to reach my goals.  By the way, my birthday is in February.  Although I would like to get up the funds before then.  If you've seen John Q, then you understand what I'm going through.

Also, I am the founder of a non-profit, no 501c3 status yet, which is focused on youth development academically, financially, socially, and mentally.  We also focus on helping anyone find a skill, trade, college assistance, tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and many other programs including child care.  I do what I can when I can as a youth minister, and I believe my future is secured.

Any suggestions and any help will be greatly appreciated.  The donations will be sent to the church which is a non-profit 501c3 who is sponsoring my kidney fundraiser.

Re: Please help me select a charity!

I totally agree with the idea about creating a acme people search charity. That was the first thing that came to
mind when I seen that link up top and seen the post tissa made about chris making a decision on donating
the money.

One of the things it could do of course is keep the money in the business, which will also help benefit tissa some
just for been so generous and it could also be something truly huge for affiliate marketing in general. When you
think about the possibility's that it could offer people with disability's, its pretty remarkable.

Anyhow I am pretty stoked either way for this community, this is the beginning of something very special.
As TAO TZU, would say "it only takes one acorn to build a forest". smile
