Topic: Back Up your Mozilla Firefox using this simple way

Hi folks, a few days ago my computer was attacked by virus. One of the important files of mine is the setting of my browser ( I use mozilla FF). I have spend my times to set my browser to make it easy to use to organized my online business site especially APS. I have set my bookmarking page, my toolbar, addons and plugins, history, etc.

And after being attacked by virus, I lost all of my browser setting. This was make me frustate. Then I start to re-build the setting of my browser like before. And this was happen not only once, but twice.

And this is a true personal story. I've tried to look a browser back up software but not find a good one. Then finally I found the solving problem how to back up my browser setting using my own way and I will tell you here. Just in minute I can back up all my Mozilla FF setting including History, Bookmarking Page, Toolbar Setting, Cookies, and restore it anytime I wish.

Ok, here is the secret. I call this as

Note : I use Mozilla Firefox 3.0.X and Windows XP Operating System

Back Up Process

  • Go to your Windows Explorer (Or by pressing Window Logo button + E)

  • Type this path to Address Bar : C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles  (where "XXXXX" is the name of the User Account of the Windows, default is Administrator)

  • You will see a folder named xxxxxx.default (where xxxxx is automatically generated by Mozilla FF and must be different with every installation)

  • Just copy that xxxxx.default folder (the size between 5-20 MB depending on how many addons and plugin you installed) to any place you wish(i.e to your another hard disk partition, flash drive, etc)  and change the folder name like "FF Back Up Feb10" or as you wish

  • Done!

If something happen to your computer and you need to reinstall Mozilla FF, don't worry about your History, ToolBar Setting, AddOns, Plugin, Cookies, Etc because you have back up files. Now here is the restore process.

Restore Process

  • Install Mozilla Firefox

  • Browse the back up folder (as mentioned above the back up folder is "FF Back Up Feb10"

  • Open the folder and copy all files in it just by pressing Ctrl + A

  • Repeat the first, second and third steps above

  • You will find a folder with different name like before may be like yyyyy.default folder. Remember, the word .default is still as the end of the folder name

  • Then paste the files in to the yyyyy.default folder

  • Done, now your new Mozilla FF is like your old Mozilla FF with your own personal setting like before

I have done this twice and it worked.

Note : Don't forget to update your Anti Virus software to get the best protection. And I suggest you to back up your Mozilla FF NOW! tongue

Hope this helps. smile

Re: Back Up your Mozilla Firefox using this simple way

Hello. Thanks for showing us the method you use to backup your Firefox profile. It seems very clean and can be done without the need of any other software. I haven't tried it myself but it must work very well. However, I'd like to suggest an alternative to back up Firefox, Thunderbird and other Mozilla software profiles, using a program created by an independent project from Mozilla.

It works very well for me. The software is called MozBackup. I'd suggest you to give it a try as well. You can even password protect the back-up file, among other cool things. Take a look here.
