Here is an example of what SEO can do to your site.

My IT services business site is fairly new and raw.
The layout is changing and a lot of content is being re-written. 
I just had to host the site prematurely as many of my prospects wanted to see my website and understand what services I am offering.
Went ahead and hosted the site.
Made sure I followed some basic principles of SEO.

Now, just go to Google and search for the keyword "IT services in India" and bingo, my site comes up first!
That is ahead of biggies like IBM, Microsoft, HP and what not......

one more keyword "Iseries services in India", my site is second only to itjungle.com which has been there for ages. IBM makes the Iseries systems (mid-range computers formerly called AS/400s) and my site is ahead of them smile

Though I don't have any affiliate links on my site (it is a IT services business site), I don't want to do a self promotion and hence no site name here smile.


I was just on a chat with Rick on skype yesterday and this is what I summarized with him.

My summarization on SEO (rather, my understanding)


1. Domain name - relevency to the business
2. age of domain - buy for few years - the longer your domain is registered the more trusting the search engines are of your site
Title tag - in line with domain name - ideal to have the keyword in title
4. keywords
5. robots.txt
6. site map
7. h1, h2 and then body text
8. backlinks from good pr rated sites
9. keep adding quality content - add a blog to your site smile
10. install google analytics and keep tweaking your site.


Update - 12th Feb 10

One of my sites after all these efforts is getting about 16% of the traffic through search engines. The other 84% is what I am driving through the various advertising methods. The site is only a 5 page site, has been around 4 months online now, just 25+ back links. I wonder, what would have been the result, had I focused on doing the SEO stuff right from day one!

The idea was to primarily look at keywords in the "IT services" space.
Now, "IT services" is a 2 word keyword and there are already tons of sites with this keyword.
I went ahead and looked for much more specific keywords "IT services in india, Iseries services in india" which are 4 word keywords and there is hardly anyone using these keywords smile
That takes me on top of the heap!

We have to get into thinking like a user. Here is an example;

Suppose I was going to be a digital camera and I am researching the web for it, what would I do.
Like any user, I have my preferences for a particular brand to start with.
Next, I will be looking at some of the key features - digital or SLR
If it is digital then, how many megapixels
then, the cost.

When I give a search criteria "cameras" in google/yahoo/msn, they will throw out lot of junk at me.
What do I do?
I become more specific - I will then search, say "Sony digital camera 10 megapixels".
Here I am looking for a particular brand, type - digital and a feature of 10MP.
This will take me to sites which are more relevant and those sites which are optimized with these specific keywords win, others lose out!


Couple of months down the line, one of my other sites will start hitting top pages smile. I have the domain for now, researching the keywords, then I will create the content to go with it and start tweaking smile

One additional input on Keyword is that ...The Website should have the content which covers this Keyword.

For Example on the Home page you say you offer the IT Services in India. It will be more effective. So the more times you use the Keyword in the content of your website the more effective the SEO score. This is a Basic Tip which we need to cover in our Websites.
